Starting a Flute Choir
Hi there fellow flutists!!
I live in N. Devon and I am interested in starting a Flute choir for both young and old.....where do I start and what are the best pieces to use? Any advice and help would be gratefully appreciated.

Hi Matsal
I don't know if this helps but I'd suggest putting up an advert in your local music shops to recruit new members, maybe also in local churches/schools. Facebook can also be a good way of connecting with local flute players. Once you have a few members, usually someone knows of somewhere to practice. If not, you could alternate houses till the group gets bigger, then if you get really stuck for somewhere, you can usually hire a space fairly cheap and all contribute.
Regarding music, try this link: www.flutewise.com/flute-choir-repertoire
Good luck!

Some great suggestions from Abbie. As far as music goes, it depends on the standard of players, but you can't go wrong with starting with trios and quartets (having as many players on each part as you need). Having more than one person on each part helps develop good intontation. There are lots of suitable pieces in Dots - archive.
There are two things you need to consider which are nothing to do with music but are important and serious - insurance and child protection issues. We live in a mad world and it is wise to be aware of every possible potential problem if you include people under 18 in your group.

my mother used to get the members (Grade 2-8) into small trios or quartets as liz suggested, but also have one piece that everyone plays a part in. If you are playing in a concert I would say you should play prelude. ( I cant find the composer. A sad tune, my mother says should always follow a slighty fast boncy tune. To finish you could make a flute arrangement for canon in D.
