Should I turn my Flute group into a Flute Choir?

I currently run a flute ensemble called 'flauto' and there are about 8 of us who all play the flute. Should I now think about including an alto and bass flute to give us more variety? I'm slightly concerned about the cost! Who pays???? And also will the new instrument effect the embochure and development of their normal flute playing???

Adding altos and basses give you a greatr variety of sound in what can be quite a bland ensemble and certainly allows for greater choiced in repetoire. If you can - go for it!

I agree with Stephen, yes, it really can make a difference. There is so much more repertoire for flute choir with alto and bass. I'm also seeing more from the US that uses contar bass - I'll have to put one on my shopping list.
The other question - where you get them from - many youngsters are getting their own alto flutes I notice. This is because they can be used for some grade exams and they are becoming more affordable. I think the price of bass flutes has also dropped in recent times. A local music service might own instruments you can borrow or you could consider your group doing some fundraising events.
Embouchure doesn't seem to be a problem providing the flute embouchure is well developed in the first place. The biggest thing to be aware of is the size of the player in relationship to the size of the instrument. Small people shouldn't play anything that is a strain on their bodies.

What excelent advice!! The just flutes own brands are excellent for the price. As is the Pearl bass flute!
