New fife players!
Today has seen the start of a very special project - to give more children the opportunity to learn to play the fife (and hopefully create more flute players!)
Joe, Bailey, Evie, Ava and Elsie all had their first lesson today with help from Emma Halnan and Emma Barrett (thanks girls). We had lots of photos taken and it was all recorded on video. We are hoping to follow these young people and record their progress. The idea is to put together a video for a website to encourage others to teach children using the fife. I know lots and lots of teachers use the fife already, but there are plenty who don't and this project might encourage them. There are huge advantages of starting on the fife; it's so easy to teach embouchure formation and hand positions and, some might say it's biggest advantage, it is so cheap!
I think the children really enjoyed their time with Emma, Emma and myself today. Emma H played them a piece from Musical Postcards by Mike Mower, we blew bubbles, learnt embouchure exercises, decorated the fifes with stickers, learnt how to balance the fife and ate some sweeties. Emma thought the most exciting thing was that they all could make a sound. So they've now gone off to practise and I'm looking forward to seeing what they can progress to tomorrow.
