Flutewise Academy/Purcell/John O'Neill/Schott
I'm getting excited about going back to the Purcell School. We'll be there for our residential course in August. I'm really thrilled that a lovely lady from the Schott Music publishing company, Annet Ferguson, has made it possible for one of their composers, John O'Neill, to come and do a workshop. This is really good news and I know we'll all really enjoy it. So thanks Annet.
Because of this, I've made a big decision, I'm going to try something I've never tried before - I'm going to open up our Academy to day people. On Wednesday 11 and Thursday 12 August, Flutewise members will be able to come along just for the day, providing they pre-book of course. I'll be putting information and a booking form on the events page very soon. Places are limited, so if you fancy coming, book early.
I haven't got all the exact details sorted out for both days yet, but I'll post more information when it is ready. In the meantime, maybe you'd like to find out a bit more about John O'Neill -
John O'Neill is an established performing musician and instrumental teacher, specialising in jazz and bossa nova. He is best known as the author of educational books for saxophone, clarinet and flute, including the best-selling ‘Jazz Method For Saxophone’.
Having first taken up the saxophone while a student of Modern Languages at Trinity College, Oxford, he went on to play the flute and clarinet, studying woodwinds with Don Rendell and improvisation with Lee Konitz, Warne Marsh and Peter Ind.
Since 1979, John has been a professional freelance musician. As a composer he has written music for dance, theatre, film and television, and as a qualified teacher with nearly thirty years experience, has taught in many different settings, both in the UK and abroad. He has also worked as an advisory teacher on jazz in relation to the GCSE curriculum in the London Borough of Enfield, and from 1989-92 directed the Enfield Schools Jazz Orchestra.
John currently gives private lessons in saxophone, clarinet, flute and improvisation from his North London home, and is available for giving jazz workshops and teaching at summer schools.
