Flutewise cover 85Competition winners

In issue number 85 of our Flutewise magazine we had a competition to write a story or poem inspired by our cover. The winners were Esther Robinson and Lizzie Briggs. Congratulations to both. Here are their entries:

Esther Robinson, aged 12, Northwich
The Busker's Tale
There are two creatures called Rookie and Mike,
Who have to busk all through the night;
They have to do it, so they can,
Bring home food, for their Nan.

Rookie is an Owl,
 Whose flute playing isn’t foul,
And Mike is a cat,
Who plays ukulele, fancy that!

Rookie plays softly and legato,
Whilst Mike plays with anger and staccato.

One night they were feeling,
Quite con dolore and dreary,
When suddenly a dog,
Started laughing like a hog!

Being professionals, they kept on playing,
But behind them they sensed even more braying.

They finally turned round,
Because the noise was ruining their sound,
To find no-one clapping,
And many people laughing.

The pair looked up,
And they saw in the sky,
A cow jumping over the moon,
But not a dish running away with a spoon.

Rookie and Mike, were feeling worse than ever,
And wished they hadn’t started today’s endeavour,
They were packing away,
When a little mouse said;

“Don’t go, I want you to stay,
“I don’t care what they say.
“I think you’re much more exciting than a jumping cow,
“How can they ignore your amazing playing,
 “How?”

So out again came the music makers,
Which are much more advanced than shakers,
They played and played for the little mouse,
And then he said, “I must get back to my house.

“I’m very sorry,
“I know you’ve played for so long,
“I really enjoyed that last song,
“But I only have halfpence to give,
“I know it’s not enough to help you live,
 “But it’s all I’ve got,
“Maybe you could put it in your money pot?”

And with that he scurried away,
And the musicians were left packing up after their long, lento day.

Lizzie Briggs, aged 11, Kendall
Hey Diddle Diddle, the Flute and the Fiddle
Hey diddle diddle, the flute and the fiddle.
The cow jumped over the moon,
The little dog laughed to see such fun
And the dish ran away with the spoon.

Hey diddle diddle, do you think it's a riddle?
The owl got out her flute,
The cat her pink uke
And they all went tootle toot toot.

Kayleigh
There once was an owl called Kayleigh
Who met a cat playing the ukulele
She got out her flute
And went tootly toot
That talented owl married Kayleigh

eerm...can I just point out that it's supposed to 'her pink ukele' and 'that talented owl called Kaylieggh' (not married) ...and Kendal only has one 'l'. Sorry. Awkward.

So what did they get?
